Courtois ruled out of Clasico with flu as Lunin steps in for Real Madrid

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will miss Sunday's La Liga Clasico at Barcelona after coming down with the flu, the club announced hours before kick-off at the Spotify Camp Nou, according to ESPN.

The 34-year-old Belgian, who has started every match for Madrid this season, was a late withdrawal from the matchday squad. Andriy Lunin, 27, will take his place in goal for the league leaders' visit, with third-choice keeper Illia Voloshyn called up to the bench.

"Courtois is a last-minute withdrawal from tonight's LaLiga matchday 10 game between Real Madrid and Barcelona due to a bout of the flu," the club said in a brief statement. "Illia Voloshyn has been called up to the squad in his place."

Lunin last featured for Madrid on May 3 in a 2-0 win over Espanyol. He served as Courtois' deputy during the club's run to the 2024 Champions League final.

The absence compounds Madrid's problems for the fixture. Vinicius Junior is already suspended for the match, serving a four-game domestic ban. Madrid trail Barcelona by six points in the table after nine rounds, with the hosts having won all their league games so far.

Kick-off is set for 9 pm local time (8 pm BST).
