Burnley appointed Fabio Celestini as head coach on 28 October, four days after sacking Nicky Hayen, and the 50-year-old Swiss will be in the dugout for the first time at home to Portsmouth on Saturday.

The club did not disclose the length of his contract. Burnley sit 22nd in the Championship with one win from 12 league games since dropping out of the Premier League, and they have not won a home league match in more than a year.

Celestini's last post was at CSKA Moscow, where he lifted the Russian Super Cup and departed by mutual agreement in May after 11 months. He took charge at Basel in October 2023 with the side struggling and, as The Guardian reported, turned them from last place into domestic double winners within 18 months, ending an eight-year wait for the Swiss title.

Burnley FC also listed a promotion at Lausanne-Sport and a Swiss Cup win at Luzern among his achievements, along with spells at Lugano, Sion and the Italian club Terracina.

In a club statement, Burnley FC said Celestini arrived with "a proven capacity to win and to adapt to different football environments".

"I look at Burnley and I see a club with big potential and players with real quality, who can help us achieve our supporters' ambitions," Celestini said. "I know the situation we are in, and I have lived it before. Our supporters deserve to see a team playing with belief from the first whistle."

Diego Lopez was named chief football officer this week and handed the search for a manager. He said Celestini had shown "extraordinary determination and conviction to come to Burnley". "We want people who truly want to be here and help this club grow," Lopez added.

Hayen lost his job after a 4-1 defeat at Lincoln City on Saturday, having taken charge of 14 matches, BBC News reported. Burnley's form had followed a relegation season in the Premier League.

Celestini earned 35 caps as a Switzerland midfielder and featured at Euro 2004, then played ten years in France and Spain for clubs including Marseille, Levante and Getafe.

Kick-off against Portsmouth at Turf Moor is set for 3pm on Saturday 31 October.
