Bayern Munich won 3-1 at Freiburg on Sunday in their first match since coach Vincent Kompany was admitted to hospital, returning to the top of the Bundesliga on goal difference.
Dayot Upamecano put the champions ahead in the 16th minute, running through the middle onto a Michael Olise pass and finishing past Freiburg goalkeeper Mio Backhaus, according to ESPN. Serge Gnabry doubled the lead three minutes before half-time with a finish from a tight angle down the left channel.
Tom Bischof's own goal in the 82nd minute, turning in a Rihito Yamamoto pass, gave the hosts hope. Olise then struck deep into stoppage time, in the 95th minute, to settle the result after Freiburg had pressed hard for an equaliser, CNA reported.
Assistant Aaron Danks took charge from the dugout. ESPN reported that Kompany collapsed at the club's training ground and remained in a stable condition in hospital. Director of sport Max Eberl said examinations were continuing and that the absence would last weeks rather than days. GlobeTV reported on 20 October that Kompany was doubtful for the Champions League trip to Arsenal because of a viral infection.
Bayern have 17 points from seven games, level with Borussia Dortmund, who had briefly gone top by beating Frankfurt on Saturday. Freiburg, who won four of their first five league games before losing to Bayer Leverkusen, are third on 13 points.
Earlier on Sunday, Hoffenheim beat Leverkusen 3-0 at home. Andrej Kramaric scored a penalty in the 79th minute and Alexander Prass added a second in the 89th. Prass was sent off for a second booking after removing his shirt to celebrate, and Max Moerstedt scored a third in stoppage time, CNA reported.
